E17 User Guide/Shelves

Shelves in E17 Language are what gnome people would call Panels, or Docks in XFCEspeak.

The highly configurable shelves in E17 allows the user to find/display any item of his liking, displayed in as many shelves as wanted.

In the image above, from left to right, you'll notice only three elements: an iBar that contains a list of scrollable launchers with flashing icons, the pager which in this case shows a layout of 9 virtual desktops, and a clock; the shelf is located center-down of the screen.

(please notice the above sample uses the SimplyWhite theme from get-e.organd is 60px thick, as opposed to the 40 default of E17.

Sample are theme-able, elements can be easily selected/removed/resized, see below:

As you'll notice, you can even duplicate items. This shelf is showing up in default E17 guise. From left to right, this time we'll have a clock, an icon box, the e start menu, the pager, a frequence monitor, the iBar & a clock again, totally unusefull for sure... unless you drive a dual-monitor setup!

A left-centered invisible-frame shelf containing only an iBar with apps & the Advanced Config panel of the Shelf Configurator.

Let's get to the meat:

Configure your shelf:

  • First of all, don't be afraid to delete one, they are available from the menu trough Configuration > Shelves. Actually, they are there for your convenience, but E17, or you as a user, doesn't need them to work.
  • As stated above, shelves are what you make of them Let's create a new one from scratch:
    • Menu (left-click on Desktop) > Configuration > Shelves, Click Add
    • A new shelf has appeared in the left pane of the Shelf Settings window

    • Now click on Configure & get this:

You've reached the basic level of tweaks, which allows you on the left part to define where's the shelf to be anchored, and on the right its size. Click on Configure Contents if you are happy with it, or go for Advanced Mode which will unveil more tweaks.
